Genre- Young adult, dystopian
What was once the western United States is now home to the Republic, a nation perpetually at war with its neighbors. Born into an elite family in one of the Republic’s wealthiest districts, fifteen-year-old June is a prodigy being groomed for success in the Republic’s highest military circles. Born into the slums, fifteen-year-old Day is the country’s most wanted criminal. But his motives may not be as malicious as they seem.
From very different worlds, June and Day have no reason to cross paths—until the day June’s brother, Metias, is murdered and Day becomes the prime suspect. Caught in the ultimate game of cat and mouse, Day is in a race for his family’s survival, while June seeks to avenge Metias’s death. But in a shocking turn of events, the two uncover the truth of what has really brought them together, and the sinister lengths their country will go to keep its secrets.
My Review
Legend has been on my tbr forever and ever. I finally got my hands on it this new year’s (I gifted it to myself). Without much further ado, here are my views on the book.
First off, I expected the book to be a little thicker. The book is thin when compared to other books of the same or similar genre and it shows in the story. A lot put into not many pages. But it worked for the story in the way that it made it very action packed and fast paced.
The world building was the bare minimum. We are thrown into the world of the Republic where Day is a wanted man(boy?) and June is a troublemaker and prodigy in the Republic’s military academy. And even as the plot moves forward, not many details get revealed. I get that it may be to add to the whole government conspiracy element but it left much to desire for.
The chapters alternate between June’s and Day’s point of view, having two separate font types for their respective chapters. I think the two font styles is a brilliant concept, Because even if the writing style may be similar for both, I automatically read the narration in one tone for June and in a different one for Day.
The plot was slightly predictable. And at the heart of it, was similar to the likes of Divergent and Hunger Games or is definitely heading towards that direction. The writing was simplistic which made the world easy to delve into.
All in all, though it wasn’t an extraordinary read, it was very hard to put down the book once I picked it up. I can’t wait to see more of June and Day in the sequel, Prodigy. I would recommend reading Legend if you are a fan of Dystopian books.
My Rating-

Cheers,
